Trellis Update with Ace Rust Stop
One Mother's Day over 10 years ago, my husband and sons installed a four-panel black metal trellis behind a black metal garden bench. It was a lovely spot in the yard. Recently I noticed that a couple of the panels were leaning, and after checking it out, I noticed a lot of rust and peeling paint. So my husband and I took them down and removed the rust with a steel brush attachment on our power drill.

After cleaning the trellises, we decided to go for a colorful finish that will make the corner of our yard pop. We went to our local Ace Hardware store (Hwy 55, Durham http://www.acehardware.com/mystore/index.jsp?store=15447&cid=localstore15447) to check out some options. We went with the Ace brand oil-based Rust Stop Primer in Red and then the Ace brand oil-based Rust Stop Enamel in Saftey Red. The idea being that with a primer in the same color, the final coat of enamel will go on more uniformly.

Because the paints are oil-based, we decided to buy a cheap brush pack and just throw the brushes away when we were done instead of messing with mineral spirits to clean up expensive brushes. We also worked outside so that we didn't need to worry about ventilation.
